Basketball has gone from strength to strength at Merlin College in recent years. In 2023, our U19 Boys' team took us on an unforgettable journey to an All Ireland final which culminated in the narrowest of defeats, losing by just two points to St Joseph's CBS, Nenagh.
Losing by the slimmest of margins is a painful end to any championship and it speaks to the outstanding level of performance on show from both teams that this was the case. Our lads can hold their heads high. The boys represented their school very well throughout the campaign and exceeded all expectations.
Our U16 Boys basketball team also won their league final, beating Castlerea on a scoreline of 42-27.
Mr. Baines, Mr. Carr, Ms. Sheahan and Mr. Broughton will be coaching the boys’ basketball this year as they venture into the B league for the first time ever after the accomplishments of the U19s, reaching the All-Ireland Cup Final, and the U16s, after retaining their regional league cup for the second year in a row. All teachers are looking forward to hopefully another successful season from an extremely talented and committed group of students.
