European Languages Week

European Languages Week

European Day of Languages is celebrated in Coláiste Mhuirlinne/Merlin College every year.

EDL is a Council of Europe initiative that is rolled out across Europe on 26th September each year involving millions of participants across multiple sectors. It's objectives are to highlight the importance of language learning, to increase multilingualism and intercultural understanding, and to promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe.

Here in Coláiste Mhuirlinne/Merlin College we are very proud of the diversity of languages and cultures present in the school, and this is reflected in a great enthusiasm for EDL as September draws to a close. The students in our school collectively speak 41 different languages!

Over the past two years, students and staff have taken part in a wide range of activities for EDL including: performances of songs and recitations in various languages, class quizzes, the creation of posters and displays of flags and greetings in different languages, and daily announcements in languages spoken and studied by our students.

In 2015, as a way of promoting numeracy among students, a survey of languages spoken in the school was carried out, the results of which were converted into a series of large pie charts. A key focus of EDL is to encourage all members of our school community to use the languages they speak, however little they may know, by exchanging a greeting or teaching someone a few new words. Above all, the aim is to widen our horizons a little while enjoying the day’s fun.
