Hurling and Camogie

Coláiste Mhuirlinne/ Merlin College began as a ‘Play to Stay Initiative’ host in September 2014.

The ‘Play to Stay’ programme was a pilot programme set up by GAA Headquarters in Dublin.

The purpose of the programme was to develop the games of hurling/ camogie and gaelic football in new urban areas around Ireland with large populations and capitalise on getting children interested and playing, especially as they have great competition from other sporting organisations in Galway City, namely rugby and soccer.

Although, our school hosted this initiative it was not solely for our students. It was a community based project. However, many of our students did take part and began on their journey to improve their skills in the fine art of hurling and camogie.

The ‘Play to Stay’ programme, although a one year programme only was very fruitful as it began in our school an interest and participation in hurling and camogie. This is something that we hope to build on as the school population grows.
