Culture Day

Cultural Day 2015 took place at Merlin College on Friday 22nd May and what a day that was. From our early morning Guess the Flag competition at assembly to our Knowledge of the World quiz during class time and a delicious spread of food from all over the globe, the day brought with it a fun filled atmosphere enjoyed by all.

The highlight of our celebration was the performance in the PE hall.

A number of students dressed in the heir native costumes and sported their fabulous wears to the sound of this year’s smash hit “Uptown Funk”. The entertainment did not stop there however as the talented students of Merlin College took to the stage to dance, sing, rap and entertain.

A wonderful day was enjoyed by all, what are we going to do next year?!!!

Coláiste Mhuirlinne/ Merlin College held their annual International Day event on Tuesday 5th April to coincide with the visit of  The Morris Knolls High School Wind Ensemble from New Jersey, USA.

Again this year a wonderful selection of native foods were showcased at morning break when students could taste a range of international foods like Jollof Rice, cabbage rolls from Romania, French sausage, Spanish omelette, Irish soda bread, to name but a few.

After lunch, The Morris Knolls High School Wind Ensemble wowed us with a 40 minute concert. The renowned band have previously played at the halftime show of the Super Bowl . Conducted by their teacher, Mr. Daniel Schwartz, the American students a mix of contemporary and classical pieces.

Following the concert our students displayed their many talents for the American visitors. There were performances from the Choral Group as well as solo performances, along with Irish dancing and hip-hop exhibitions. A first year student Tintswalo Mhelembe recited a piece of Zulu poetry dressed in traditional costume while another 1st year Manoah Kazadi read a poem he composed especially for the event. A dance ensemble from first year closed the show with their version of the Amhrán an Dreoilín dance.

Another fantastic International Day celebration! Many thanks to all the parents, students and teachers who supported the day! We are already planning next year’s event!
